Lay patients—those without theoretical training or professional community—make up the vast majority of analysands\, yet their authentic voices remain largely absent from our field’s discourse. Unlike analyst-patients who can contextualize their experience through theory and collegial exchange\, lay patients navigate analysis without a map. Their accounts offer raw\, unfiltered insights into what truly matters in the therapeutic encounter—insights with the potential to transform our understanding of the analytic process. \nThis talk invites attendees to join a pioneering project exploring the place and value of patient narrative in psychoanalytic discourse. Together we’ll consider excerpts from Joan K. Peters’ own memoir Untangling: A Memoir of Psychoanalysis\, alongside narratives she is collecting for a forthcoming special issue of Psychoanalytic Inquiry on The Patient Experience. His early work on groups\, particularly his attention to the group mind\, manifested first in the basic assumption group and then in the work group that mediates the tension between the unconscious collective basic assumption and the needs of the individual that threaten the unity of the group. This understanding of the fundamental role of group life remains a vital source of understanding both intersubjective and intrapsychic conflict. In this talk\, we will look first at his pre-Kleinian work on groups\, and then trace the development of his thinking through his seminar in Los Angeles\, his last major work\, Attention and Interpretation\, and conclude with his clinical seminars. \nOur focus will be on how his theory of the group mind represents an important development of Freud’s primary and secondary processes and how his technique for interpreting the group unconscious becomes the ground for his work on “the science of at-one-ment” as elaborated in his LA seminar and in Attention and Interpretation.
