SUMMARY:CE: "Emotional Inheritance: The Legacy of Trauma" - Dr. Galit Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored byThe WILA Alumni Association\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n PROGRAM DESCRIPTION\nThis talk will focus on Atlas’ new book Emotional Inheritance: A Therapist\, Her Patients\, and the Legacy of Trauma. It will discuss the ways in which trauma is transmitted from one generation to the next and held in our minds and bodies as our own. Atlas will examine emotional material that we unknowingly carry with us: the memories\, feelings\, and traumas that we inherit from previous generations and the link between our parents and grandparents’ history\, and our own emotional struggles. How do we inherit\, hold\, and process things that we don’t remember or didn’t experience ourselves? What is the weight of that which is present but not fully known? This talk will be divided to three parts\, each will focus on a different aspect of our emotional inheritance. The clinical tales will describe the many ways in which we can locate the ghosts of the past that hold us back and interfere with our lives and will focus on love\, loss and the power of attachment. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “Emotional Inheritance is a gem for anyone\, but it is an essential read for those seeking to understand trauma\, therapy\, and the healing process.”\n– Bruce D. SUMMARY:CE: “Futurevision:” The Analyst’s Concept of the Patient’s Future Self and Implications for Treatment - Dr. Weisel-Barth
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored byThe WILA Alumni Association\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n PROGRAM DESCRIPTION\nDr. Joye Weisel-Barth\, senior instructor\, training analyst\, supervisor\, and Board member at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis\, will present on the concept of “futurevision” in psychoanalytic treatment. As will be discussed\, “futurevision” is the analyst’s image and imagining of the patient’s future self. Often patients come to treatment depressed\, stuck trying to resolve the past and failing to meet the needs of the present. The future is absent\, or a bleak projection of what was or is. With what Dr. Weisel-Barth calls “futurevision\,” the analyst and patient are able to co-create an image of the patient’s future\, specifically one that contains the patient’s growth into a more developed self. The program will involve three components: 1) a description of the relational formation of the analyst’s “futurevision” of the patient as well as its influence on treatment\, 2) case material to elucidate a real-world example of “futurevision” in psychoanalytic practice\, and 3) discussion with attendees. \nThis event is presented at the intermediate level  and is for clinicians of any orientation interested in or practicing relational psychoanalytic work. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n LEARNING OBJECTIVES\nUpon completion of the program participants should be able to: \n\nDescribe the concept of “futurevision” as a functional part of the analyst’s holding environment\nIdentify the presence and utility of “futurevision” in participants’ clinical work\nDifferentiate between “futurevision” and colluding with manic defense\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n PRESENTER\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n JOYE WEISEL-BARTH\, PH.D.\, PSY.D. is a senior instructor\, training analyst\, supervisor\, and Board member at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles. SUMMARY:CE: A Heart Shattered\, the Private Self\, and a Life Unlived - Dr. Martha Stark
DESCRIPTION:Co-Sponsored byThe WILA Alumni Association &New Center for Psychoanalysis\n  \nProgram Description\n\nPatients who have never fully confronted – and grieved – the pain of their early-on heartbreak will often cling tenaciously to their hope that perhaps someday the object of their desire will be forthcoming. But there are others who\, in the aftermath of their early-on heartbreak\, will find themselves withdrawing completely from the world of objects – their hearts shattered – only then to find themselves overwhelmed by a terrifying sense of alienation and harrowing loneliness. Instead of relentless hope\, their experience is of relentless despair. \nIn this Presentation\, clinical vignettes will be offered that demonstrate how the therapist\, ever attuned to the patient’s intense ambivalence about remaining hidden vs. becoming found\, can help the patient overcome her dread of surrender to resourceless dependence (Khan 1972) such that there can be moments of authentic meeting (Guntrip 1969) between patient and therapist that restore purpose\, direction\, and meaning to an existence that might otherwise have remained desolate\, impoverished\, and desperately lonely. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\nUpon completion of the program participants should be able to: \n\nhighlight the primary difference between relentless hope and relentless despair\nelaborate upon the patient’s intense ambivalence about entering into the world of objects\nexplain the relevance of the concept of dreading surrender to resourceless dependence upon another\nexpound upon the importance of moments of authentic meeting as offering opportunity for restoring purpose\, meaning\, and direction to a life otherwise unlived\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n MARTHA STARK\, MD\, a graduate of Harvard Medical School\, is a Holistic (Adult and Child) Psychiatrist / Psychoanalyst in private practice in Boston\, Massachusetts. \nMartha is Faculty\, Harvard Medical School; Co-Founder / Co-Director / Faculty\, Center for Psychoanalytic Studies; Faculty\, Psychiatry Redefined; Faculty / Scientific Advisory Board\, Academy of Comprehensive Integrative Medicine; Adjunct Faculty\, William James College and Smith College School for Social Work; Former Faculty\, Boston Psychoanalytic Institute and Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. \nMartha is an award-winning author of eight books on psychoanalytic theory and practice – several of which are “required reading” at various psychoanalytic training institutes and in psychodynamic psychotherapy programs both here in this country and abroad. \nBoard Certified by the American Association of Integrative Medicine\, Martha contributes chapters to integrative medicine textbooks and articles to peer-reviewed toxicology / environmental medicine journals. SUMMARY:CE: A Relational Approach to Couples Psychotherapy - Dr. Ringstrom
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored byThe WILA Alumni Association\n  \nProgram Description\nThis program involves Dr. Philip Ringstrom’s presentation of his original model for doing relational psychoanalytic couples therapy. It involves a grounded framework for addressing the complex psychodynamics of couples in highly practical ways. The model is based on three broad themes: 1) the actualization of self-experience in an intimate relationship; 2) the capacity for mutual recognition and 3) the relationship having a mind of its own. Based on his 2014 Goethe Award winning book\, A Relational Psychoanalytic Approach to Couples Psychotherapy\, Dr. Ringstrom will offer a clinically useful road map of six nonlinear steps which wed his theory and practice. \nHis model begins with the therapist’s close attunement to the “hopes and dread’s” that each partner brings to the relationship\, pointing out the couple’s “vicious circle” interactions when each partner’s developmental (transference) longings trigger painful or unmanageable (repetitive transference) states in the other. The problems of blame\, shame\, failure of mutual recognition\, and difficulties in self-actualization are clearly laid out. On the heels of close attunement to the couple’s conscious longings and grievances\, Ringstrom shifts to how the emergence and exploration of enactments illuminates couples unconscious core repetitions\, with the goal of moving these core\, seemingly immutable conflicts (often between unconscious multiple self- states) from being etched in stone to being something that the therapy can begin to play with more improvisationally. \nThe overall presentation promises to be both engaging and stimulating. Dr. Ringstrom will lecture from a three-page-handout- outline of his model of couple’s psychotherapy while involving extensive audience interaction. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\nUpon completion of the program participants should be able to: \n\nIdentify the three organizing themes in couples’ psychotherapy: self-actualization in an intimate relationship\, mutual recognition\, and ‘the relationship having a mind of its own’\nUnderstand how these themes lend themselves to the principle of “thirdness” in long-term intimate relationships\nIncorporate changes in technique utilizing the model’s six steps\nDiscern the potential advantages and disadvantages of this model\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n PHILIP RINGSTROM\, PH.D.\, PSY.D. is a Senior Training and Supervising Analyst\, and Faculty Member of the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles\, where he is also in fulltime private practice. SUMMARY:CE: Call of Darkness: Managing Suicidality in Clinical Practice - Dr. Hedges
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored byThe WILA Alumni Association\n  \nProgram Description\nThis course for mental health professionals begins with the awareness that our ability to predict suicide is little better than chance and that at present there are no consistently reliable empirically validated treatment techniques to prevent suicide. However\, Dr. Hedges will demonstrate that in the past three decades much has been learned about the dynamics of suicide and many promising treatment approaches have been advanced that are slowly yielding clinical as well as empirical results. \nDr. Hedges will present the groundbreaking work on suicidality of Freud\, Jung\, Menninger and Shneidman as well as the more recent work of Linehan\, Kernberg\, Joiner and the attachment theorists along with the features in common that these treatment approaches seem to share. He will put forth a Relational Listening approach regarding the origins of suicidality in a relational/developmental context and will consider their implications for treating\, and managing suicidality. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\nUpon completion of the program participants should be able to: \n\nDefine what is meant by “psychache”\nDescribe Joiner’s interpersonal approach to understanding and managing suicide\nState why reliable suicide research has not been possible\nExplain the difference between “mourning” and “melancholia”\nExplain how a “split in the ego” can lead to suicidality\nState how the attachment-abandonment dynamic can lead to instrumental suicidality\nState how the connection-withdrawal dynamic can lead to lethal suicidality.\nExplain what can be learned in a “suicide autopsy”\nList four key elements in documenting suicidality that limit your liability\nDefine what is meant by “telescoped memory”\nDiscuss why so many creative and famous people suicide at the peak of their careers.\nExplain why suicide is thought to be always dyadic despite the appearance of isolation and loneliness\nDefine “suicidal career”\nState the difference between “a cry for help” and “a cry of pain”\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n LARRY HEDGES\, PH.D.\, PSY.D.\, ABPP\, began seeing patients in 1966 and completed his training in child psychoanalysis in 1973. SUMMARY:CE: Life in the Upside Down: Working with Borderline States - Dr. Helscher
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored byThe WILA Alumni Association\n  \nProgram Description\nWorking with borderline states is extremely challenging because we often feel invaded\, overwhelmed\, and helpless to make sense of what is happening with the patient. SUMMARY:CE: The Follow Up Interpretation - Dr. Spivak
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by\nThe WILA Alumni Association\n  \nProgram Description\nThe interpretive process is potentially the therapist’s most powerful tool for stimulating personal growth through emotional integration. But\, since an interpretation is aimed to destabilize some aspect of the patient’s neurotically organized internal world\, it can readily be experienced as a threat and therefore warded off. Even when the patient accepts the interpretation\, initially feeling recognized and understood\, unconsciously\, he may be quite threatened by the knowledge about himself that has long been disavowed. Understandable\, the new view of himself may quickly vanish as he is unknowingly desperate to re-stabilize himself by retreating to a familiar\, safer\, albeit self-defeating position. This program focuses on learning to make follow-up interpretations as a vital tool for stemming the patient’s retreat and advancing the treatment.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\nUpon completion of the program participants should be able to: \n\nThe distinction between the interpretive attitude and the interpretive offering\nCriteria for deciding if to interpret\, when to interpret\, and what to interpret in a session\nTo become more attentive to the immediate and delayed effects of interpretation as they are revealed in unconscious clinical material and countertransference reactions and enactments\nTo interpret at the “appropriate level” in order to help to complete an archaic developmental communication from the patient\nTo construct empathic and sensitive follow up interpretations that can often prevent or work through impasses\nTo attend to and address how the patient hears the interpretation: an understanding; an attack; a seduction; a punishment; an act of jealousy or envy\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ALAN P. SUMMARY:CE: Individualities: How Personality Differences Matter for Psychotherapy - Dr. McWilliams
DESCRIPTION:Co-Sponsored byThe WILA Alumni Association &New Center for Psychoanalysis\n  \nProgram Description\nAppreciating the clinical implications of personality differences has been a central concern for psychotherapists since the early part of the twentieth century. Our patients are unique individuals\, with specific\, personality-related strengths and weaknesses\, and although we may focus on a particular “disorder” that any client describes to us\, we understand that problem in the context of the person’s individuality. Dr. McWilliams discusses the history of the concepts of personality structure and disorder and their relevance to practice\, reviewing ten different psychological lenses through which personality has been viewed: temperament\, attachment\, observed clinical pattern\, defensive structure\, affective organization\, implicit cognition\, drive tendencies\, self-definition versus self-in-relation orientation\, core relational theme\, organizing developmental issue. She explores central tensions between research and clinical paradigms\, between trait-based and theme-based conceptions of personality\, and between the assumptions underlying the DSM and those underlying the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\nUpon completion of the program participants should be able to: \n\nDescribe the major differences between categorical and inferential/dimensional approaches to conceptualizing personality differences\nDifferentiate between understanding personality in terms of traits\, even conceived as dimensional\, versus in terms of intersubjective themes\, and to apply that understanding toward a more nuanced formulation of the psychologies of their individual clients\nApply Blatt’s anaclitic-introjective polarity to the improvement of their clinical work\nImprove their capacity to diagnose paranoid themes and psychotic-level preoccupations in their patients\nMake clinical choices that increase their effectiveness with patients who have personality patterns that reflect particular attachment styles\nDevelop a psychotherapy style appropriate for each client’s level and type of personality structure\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n NANCY MCWILLIAMS\, PH.D.\, ABPP\, who teaches at the Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology at Rutgers\, is author of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process (1994\, rev. ed. 2011)\, Psychoanalytic Case Formulation (1999)\, and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: A Practitioner’s Guide (2004)\, all with Guilford Press\, and is Associate Editor of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (2006).
