PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This presentation takes up the challenge of the pressured external world to therapeutic dyad in the consulting room, including the question of the value of therapy at all at a time of various social threats: climate, racism, war, politics. The focus will be on the clinical encounter full of the psychodynamics of powerful emotional and external conflict, shock, and divisiveness. I will explore the clinical desire, often for therapist as well as patient, for answers in world that is erupting with rapid change, challenge, and violence.
Please note the program will contain a 15 minute break and will grant 3 CE credits.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the program participants should be able to:
- Name their psychological points of reference with regard to social threats.
- Describe the development of anger and its purposes for the analyst and patient.
- Use clear language for recognizing and expressing differences in the clinical encounter.
- Detail a definition of ‘container-contained’ with greater depth.
PRESENTER
LEIGH TOBIAS, PH.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst and member of the Infant Observation Faculty at the Psychoanalytic Center of California. She holds the co-Chair for Continuing Education for 2023-24. She is the current President of the North American Psychoanalytic Confederation (NAPsaC); has been past President of the PCC, past President of The Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Institutes (CIPS). Dr. Tobias maintains a full-time private practice in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy with adults and couples in Beverly Hills, CA.
